Wednesday 2nd May 2012

Here we are – late again! One day I will surprise you all and get this blog done on time, in the meanwhile, I know you have been waited with escalating excitement for the details of our marvellous May get together.

With so many of us making the Bedford Mystery Quilt, we had the privilege of a visit from Lessa Siegal the designer (and cutter of so many kits!) of this  superb mystery quilt. Some of us sewed hard all day and got lots done, many of us chatted all day and got a little done. Sitting with Ramona and Sandra, you can guess which category I was in!  However we did get to see the finished quilt, which I am not able to show you just yet (I am still being watched!) – but from August onwards you will be able see our finished products. I can assure you it is a magnificent quilt – congratulations to Lessa.

Lessa also demonstrated her half square triangle method as well as a nifty flying geese method – and showed us how she marked her ruler when cutting so many kits – with little red stick on thingies, which we now all want! I missed the demo, so am hoping someone, not too overcome with the excitement of the day can remember how Lessa did her triangles and geese.

We had a fine spread for lunch, which I forgot to photograph (or did it disappear too quickly?) and still managed some great show and tell.

First of all Jo had the most wonderful idea for making a doll’s carry cot for a friend’s grand daughter – using one of those mass produced supermarket bags – you have to fold it into thirds and this, along with a little mattress, quilt and pillow made by Jo. What a great idea! Then we have Ginny and I know it has been said before, redundant in her splendour in a fabulous jacket which she made to wear to the AQC gala. The pattern is from perpetual patterns and is called “Artist’s vest” – quite appropriate for our Ginny. She dyed some of the fabrics she used – using cellophane with wet fabric wrapped around it (I think it was wet fabric – or it may have been wet cellophane – have a go and let us know which works!).

Here we have a gorgeous button challenge wall hanging from 2004 from Fran and the most beautiful caged bird (don’t worry – we let him out to have a fly around) made by Robyn, from a Homespun pattern.

Wyn brought along her beautiful finished table topper, as well as a lovely necklace made with Lisa Walton’s – and I quote “fur balls”! I suspect I intended to write felt balls – in fact, I suspect this very strongly,  as I know most of us who went to AQC indulged in Lisa felt balls. I do love the colour combination that Wynn has used, together with lovely little beads. If the fur balls are still a problem Lisa, I know a good vet in Sydney for you.

Marilyn produced these wonderful hand dyes from a class with Wynn – yet another skill to add to her many talents. And Wendy made this terrific stack and slash quilt for a local refuge. A wonderful gift.

Here we have Bronwyn’s scraps –  if any of you have scraps from 3/4 of an inch wide, please bring them along for Bronwyn – she has promised to show us what she does with them next month.  And from our hexagon queen Bar – her latest production – very impressive!

Louise has made this terrific I Spy quilt for her grandson, with great backing fabric and our new member Norma (an Accuquilt distributor) sent me this photo of a beautiful quilt made with the tumbler and border dies – impressive!

Until next month – when we have our biggest morning tea as well as a raffle – bring along your gold coins please.

That’s it from you roving reporter,

Helen Evans

Whoops – how did that get there? Gosh – it’s a photo of my great niece Evie (5) holding her brand new baby sister Jude Dorothy. Don’t know how it got here!
